How to Capture Wildlife in Your Garden

If you are a wildlife lover then you might be wanting to capture images of wildlife in your garden. It might be the case that you have seen evidence of wildlife but don’t know for sure what is coming and going. I had this issue in my garden and can highly recommend the camera that I bought.

I have mounted my camera on a post that can be moved around the garden.

A lot of wildlife seems to come during the night so it might not be practical to actually see it for yourself. I had this situation when I moved into my current house and I realised my compost heap was being disturbed by something. I thought it was quite possibly a fox but never actually saw anything.

I decided to buy a wildlife camera to see if I could capture some footage of what was going on. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money so I found a camera on Amazon that seemed to fit the bill.

I wanted one that was rechargeable via usb so that I didn’t have to keep buying batteries. One that worked in the dark and had a motion sensor. There are a lot to choose from but having now had this one for almost 2 years (and it has been outside that whole time), I can say that I am very happy with it.

The camera is easy to set up and you can connect to it via Bluetooth to view the images it has captured (so you do need to be within Bluetooth range to view it). If you want to get a camera that you can access via WiFi from anywhere then this is not the one for you!

There are lots of options that you have control over, including length of video clip, how sensitive to movement it is and the hours you want it to work between. I have also found the quality of the video clips to be very good and will post a few here.

Added to that, over the last 2 years I have only had to recharge it 2 or 3 times, so that battery lasts pretty well.

Here are some clips of the wildlife that I have managed to capture:

Firstly, I was right about the fox disturbing my compost heap! I have loads of footage of the fox coming in to my garden on a regular basis so here is just one of the videos of her sniffing around the pond.

Only recently did I see some hedgehog droppings in my garden so I was pleased to see this one a couple of nights later.

There was also a very unusual visitor to my garden which I just happened to see as I was going through the footage on the camera. Bearing in mind I am probably over a mile from the river and in a very urban area, I was shocked to see an otter pop up on the camera. I have only seen it once and don’t really expect to see one again!

The App that is used for this camera is called Trailcam Go. Here is a snapshot of some of the settings you can configure on the camera:

I have actually not yet tried the timelapse feature on the camera so I might have to give that a go. Maybe try it during the day when it is snowing or something, could be interesting!
