There are two key ways of keeping the water in a hot tub clean – one is keeping the proper chemical levels and the other is keeping the filter clean. If you have a Lay-z-spa hot tub like me then you may be wondering can you reuse the hot tub filter so that you don’t have to keep spending money on new ones?
When I first bought my tub tub a year ago I also bought a bunch of spare filters for when then one that came with the hot tub got too dirty to keep using. I was washing the filter under the tab and giving it a good scrub and then putting it back in again.
I had previously hired hot tubs on a few occasions and this was what I was told to do with the hot tub hire.
But since having the hot tub I have now discovered a few more ways to clean the hot tub filter which means that you don’t have to keep buying replacements. Obviously the filters will have an end life and you may well have to replace them eventually or else have some spares to swap around but you are able to clean and reuse your existing ones.
A few of the best ways of cleaning hot tub filters are as follows:
- bucket, broom and hose method – put the filter on to the broom handle and hold it over a bucket. You can then use a hose to spray the filter and spin it around until it is clean.
- Soak it overnight in some kind of Oxy action stain remover and then if needs be put it in the dishwasher (not too hot).
- Wash in the washing machine (make sure it is also not on too hot).
Above is a brief video showing the cleaning of the filter.
If you alternate a couple of filters and keep cleaning them like this then they should last months rather than throwing out filters each time they get too dirty as that does get expensive.
Make sure that you completely clean the filter and don’t leave any chemicals in it that you may have used to clean it.
