Mahut v Isner – The Longest Tennis Match In History – Wimbledon 2010

The Longest Tennis Match In History – How It Started

wimbledonSo on Tuesday 22nd June 2010 at Wimbledon in England, began the longest tennis match in history. Nicolas Mahut of France was pitted against John Isner of the USA in round two of the championships. The first 4 sets were played out on the first day with the scores being 4-6 6-3 7-6 6-7. Isner was really expected to win as he was seeded 13th with Mahut being a qualifier to the event ranked at 148 in the world. But as they got into the 5th set all of the records started to fall. The record for the longest ever tennis match in a Grand Slam (or any other tennis event come to that), in terms of both time spent on the court and number of games completed was broken. Another tennis record that was broken was the record for the highest number of aces hit in a game by one player (well, both of the players surpassed the original record of 78 held by Ivo Karlovic.)

The Longest Tennis Match – Isner v Mahut – Day 2

As they went into day 2 of the match the scores got more and more bizarre as neither player could break the other one’s serve. There were a few break points in the match on day 2 and even a match point or two for Isner but the match just went on and on for 7 hours on that day alone. Both players looked tired but Mahut actually looked pretty fresh compared with the struggling Isner who looked like he could barely put one foot in front of the other. However, he hang on by holding his serve really well and slamming down aces and Mahut just couldn’t break him.

As the light started to fade on day 2 at around 9pm and with the scores at 59 all in the fifth set, it was Mahut who suggested that they should call it a day and come back on the Thursday. Even though he looked completely exhausted, Isner did not seem keen on this idea and seemed to want to play on but in the end as they both could not agree, the match was suspended amidst boos from the crowd which soon changed to cheers and a standing ovation for the two players. At this point the match had lasted for almost exactly 10 hours.

Isner v Mahut – Day 3

So they came back out onto court 18 at Wimbledon at 3.30pm, with the scores standing at 59-59 games in the final set. They two players battled on for around another hour when finally Isner broke Mahut’s serve and the match ended withIsner winning 70 games to 68. Finally the longest game in tennis history had come to an end. It was almost a shame that there had to be a loser at this point as both players had battled continuously but there could only be one outcome and that was – somebody had to lose.

So with all the records smashed and 11 hours and 5 minutes of tennis played, there was a presentation made to both the players and the umpire at the end of the game by Anne Jones and Tim Henman, two of England’s most successful tennis players. The players then stood for photos by the scoreboard until Mahut decided that enough was enough and went back to the dressing room.

Whether this kind of epic tennis match will ever happen again is questionable – it by far beat any of the existing records and if it is ever broken, it will be a long time coming. Both players will deservedly go down in the record books.

Stop Back Pain!

So, as someone who has suffered lower back pain for years after an operation to remove part of a disc, I have tried many means to stop the constant back pain that nags me especially when I do a little bit of lifting or gardening.

I have some pills that can really take the edge off the pain but you don’t want to be taking pills all your life. In addition I use heat packs and ice packs and these do help to a certain extent, plus doing the exercises that the doctor has recommended.

However, I recently bought a back brace (or support) which is a sturdy elasticated belt that supports the lower back. It has 2 adjustable heavy velcro straps so that you can get the support to the tightness that you need. The back support that I bought was the Neoprene Double Pull Lumbar Back Support Brace sold by Health & Care. I had looked though quite a number of options for back support braces and this one offered exactly what I wanted in terms of choices of size (many choices and descriptions of the waist sizes that wach one would fit) and also at a good price.

It is a sturdy piece of kit that has massive velcro sections to ensure the fit is tight and secure. It can be worn under or over clothing although I found it more comfortable over trousers as it occasionally needed pulling down after I had sat down with it on.

I did try and buy one on the high street but I had to take it back as it was too big and did not fit round my waist (it came in a one size fit). Plus that one was a bit too bulky.

With this back brace you get a good choice of sizes to fit all shapes so it will be a much better fit when you get it than a one size fits all.

So, after wearing this back brace for 2 days, I have no back pain. This has not happened to me for a long time so I am very impressed. I’m not sure how long that will last when I take it off but I think the idea is to use it only occasionally when you need that extra support. I have read reviews about people wearing it when they play golf which is something that I will need to do and now makes me look forward to a game of golf with much more pleasure.

The above back brace is from the Amazon UK site but you can obviously also get a good selection from the Amazon US site, for example the following:

Wozzilroy – The New Celeb Sports Couple!

So with the demise of the old celebrity couples including this week the split of Ashton Kucher and Demi Moore, our appetite for more celebrity couples is satiated with the hottest new couple (in the sports world in any event) that is made up of the world’s number 1 female tennis player and the world’s number two golfer.

‘Wozzilroy’ as Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have been dubbed by friends and fans alike (in fact, was the term invented by Graeme McDowell when he tweeted this picture of them recently?) have not been a couple for that long as Rory only split up with his long term girlfriend earlier in the year.

Rory Mcilroy and Caroline Wozniacki - Sports Hottest Couple

But in recent weeks they have been seen together a lot and are making no secret of their romance. With the power of Twitter these days it is possible to know what is going on as it happens, especially when the celebs themselves tweet the news!

Caroline has recently had her first golf lesson with Justin Parsons at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Dubai and apparently Rory said that she didn’t do too badly! it certainly seems like love when they are trying out each other’s sports!

At the end of September Rory gave Caroline a golf club with the word ‘Wozzilroy’ engraved on it and she tweeted a picture for all to see:

Wozniacki tweeted a picture of the club that McIlroy gave her inscribed with 'Wozzilroy'

Bookies are already laying short odds on the couple becoming engaged, getting married or having a baby on the next year or so but let’s face it, McIlroy is only 22 and Wozniacki is only 21 so it is really early days for any of that kind of speculation!

Is IndyCar as Safe as Formula 1?

With the racing world still reeling from the tragic death of British driver Dan Wheldon, questions must really be asked about how safe motor racing is and in particular IndyCar racing? Wheldon’s death occurred in a 15 car pile up in the Indianapolis 500 race when a number of cars burst into flames in a mass collision.

Trials had been underway for a safer car and ironically Wheldon had been involved in those trials, but in this day and age, with all the safety features that are available in other race series, questions must be asked about ow this can still happen.

Of course motor racing has always been a dangerous sport, there is no other way it could be when travelling at such high speeds in such small and lightweight vehicles, but one should take note of the safety record of formula 1 cars whose last death on the racetrack was that of Ayrton Senna in 1994, and it is hoped that it will stay that way.

Formula 1 has taken great pains to install numerous additional safety mechanisms in the cars and in the rules to hopefully make fatalities on the racetrack a thing of the past.  In contrast, since the death of Ayrton Senna, there have been fatal accidents in IndyCar races with Wheldon’s being the most recent.

Perhaps IndyCar and Formula 1 can take lessons from each other and learn some way to make fatal crashes a thing of the past so that more widows are not left and young children orphaned.
